Miami’s first lady breaks down her relationship with Rozay and their new song, “Barking.”
From the “Diamond Princess” to “The Baddest,” Miami’s first lady, Trina, needs no introduction when it comes to being one of the queens of hip hop. Known for a razor sharp tongue, sexy lyrics and knowing exactly how to turn a song up a notch, with her upcoming, currently untitled sixth studio album, she’s taking a different approach to her music.
The now independent femcee isn’t depending on a major label to push her because she plans to catapult herself to the next level thanks to some encouraging words from Rick Ross.
“Ross is my brother, I love him so much,” she told BET.com. We started out together and I’ve held him down since the beginning and he felt more so like you should do your own thing more — you are bigger than being signed to me. You are a boss realistically.”
After their conversation, she took his advice and decided that it was time to run her own brand and label imprint. She collaborated with Rozay on the new track “Barking,” one of the many features she’s pulled for her new album.
“It’s one of those records that really, honestly, I would not have done on my new album. But it’s the real, it’s a Trina record from the beginning, but advanced to the newer time,” she said of the song which she describes as a “raw,” “wild” club record. “It’s fun … it’s so Miami.” One thing she hasn’t settled on, however, is the album’s title.
“I think that I always title the album towards the closing of the album. I don’t know why I do that,” she said. “I think it’s just the vibe. As I go on, my emotions change … right before it’s over I’ll say, ‘This is what I’m gonna call it,’ and that’s kinda how it happens.” For now, she said, “I’m just excited to work on this album the way I’ve been working on it.”
